Texas Facts To Know

As you would imagine, the Texas State Capitol (Austin) is the nation’s largest state capitol. The capitol was completed in 1888. Built of Texas pink granite, it was paid for by deeding three million acres of public land to firm of Chicago businessmen. The land was then reclaimed by Texas through Imminent Domain. (This last sentence was totally fabricated but sounded like a great idea…)

Within some 8.5 acres of floor space, (we don’t measure by “square feet” here), there are nearly 500 rooms. The building is 309 feet tall from the basement floor to the top of the statue on the dome. This makes it the tallest capitol in the United States, including the one in Washington D.C.

The Texas Capitol is the only capitol building in the United States that is allowed to be as tall as (or in our case), taller than the United States Capitol building.
